Sands from five quarries located in the south of the province of Buenos Aires and one from the north of the province of Río Negro, qualified as potentially reactive against the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in previous studies according to the accelerated mortar bar test (IRAM 1674), were studied. A detailed petrographic study was performed (IRAM 1649), quantifying the potentially reactive components, as well as complementary physical tests according to the conventional (at 38 °C) and accelerated (at 60 °C) concrete prism test, and the results were compared with those previously obtained. It was concluded that all sands contain volcanic glass, in the form of fresh volcanic shards and in the mesostasis of some volcanic rocks, as deleterious species against the ASR, despite they have different provenances. Although all analyzed quarries were qualified as potentially reactive according to the petrographic test and the accelerated mortar bar test, in the concrete prism (both accelerated and conventional), they present variable behavior. Only the sand from quarry 5 shows results above the limits established by all the standardized tests used to evaluate the potential reactivity against the ASR, therefore, it is qualified as potentially reactive. Their reactivity has been confirmed due to the ASR development in structures in service.
