Evaluación del riesgo sísmico para Tolhuin, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, aplicando el programa Selena

Resumen

La población de Tolhuin (2.500 habitantes) está situada en la cabecera del lago Fagnano, a 1 km de la traza de la falla Magallanes-Fagnano (M-F), la principal fuente sismogénica en el sector argentino de Tierra del Fuego. La falla M-F ha generado varios eventos sísmicos de magnitud cercana a M=8, de los cuales el más reciente ocurrió en 1949, cuando la urbanización de Tolhuin era incipiente. Desde entonces, Tolhuin ha crecido rápidamente en población y en superficie edificada. Es objeto de este trabajo evaluar el efecto que hoy tendría un sismo de magnitud similar al de 1949. La simulación aplica el programa de computación SELENA (Seismic Loss Estimation using a logic tree Approach), en modos determinístico y probabilístico, postulando sendos epicentros localizados sobre la falla M-F, distantes 120 km y 30 km de Tolhuin. La ubicación de los epicentros intenta modelar el comportamiento del tramo curvo (‘restraining bend’) de la falla. La caracterización geotécnica del sustrato se basa en datos de la literatura y observaciones de campo, y se hace una evaluación expeditiva de la sismorresistencia de la tipología edilicia dominante. Los resultados de las simulaciones indican daños materiales leves para el sismo lejano, y daños severos para el caso de sismo cercano. La simulación probabilística dio resultados intermedios. La conclusión es que es conveniente tomar medidas preventivas, pausadas pero rigurosas, para mitigar las consecuencias de un posible sismo destructivo. Asimismo se concluye que la zonificación sísmica del INPRES para Tierra del Fuego debiera ser modificada.
